Father's Day.

(taken last november by a talented friend)
Just wanted to give a shout out to my husband/BFF/partner-in-crime, Dan, on his very first Father's Day. So happy you're my baby's daddy! There's no one else I'd rather be with on this crazy/awesome/exhausting adventure called parenthood.
And now, a photo dump of my two cutie-pies :)
(taken a few months ago. oh so cute.)

Cities & Work, etc.

ol' chicago

Sorry folks, I don't have any footage of Christmas in Cambridge (or Boston) to share today, so it's back to Chicago for us! (the positive of getting stuck in Chicago for a day and a half longer: more time to wander those pretty city streets. the negative: it was 9 below with the wind chill, making city wandering a little painful). This picture was taken from the warmth and coziness of a bookstore on Michigan Avenue, where Dan typed a paper and I fretted about Etsy shipments.

Speaking of, the madness continues! I'm learning all about what it takes to be a REAL working artist! And also about boundaries. As in: when to stop working to eat? And/or spend time with my rockstar husband? (who is today (and most days), a SUPERrockstar b/c he helped me out sooo much. with little things and big, like: fixing one of my sold items that developed a case of verybadairbubbles, sending me into a panic; calming me down from said panic; and driving me to the post office to ship things when I cut it too close to closing time to walk). So a BIG thank you and xoxo to DB today...you're the best!!

October 13.

us in the early days

A very important date. A date on which my life changed forever, in a really, really good way. Three years ago exactly, on October 13, 2007, I had my first date with Dan :)

This is a story I've been meaning to tell for a looong time, but have just never gotten around to writing it down. So I figured, what better day to do that than today? On our three year "anniversary." Soooo (deep breath, this is gonna be a long one), here goes.

It all started with a lonely, mopey girl in New York (me) and a dashingly handsome (but also little bit lonely) boy in Virginia (Dan). My NYC roommate/sista had urged me to try online dating when I first moved in with her, and determined not to waste my time in New York being lonely and mopey (and also because she was a pretty persuasive roomie), I signed up. And proceeded to go on a series of mediocre, sometimes wildly uncomfortable, dates all around New York City. It should also be mentioned that I hadn't dated much AT ALL prior to this. A few dates here and there over the years, and then one quite serious relationship that ended unexpectedly, leaving me heartbroken and lost (that relationship, unfortunately and unhealthily, kept resurfacing, even throughout my time in New York, and, in the very end, left me & my fragile heart in a heaping pile of wreckage)(not to be dramatic or anything). So. Dating, in a nutshell, scared me. And excited me a little, too, because I knew it was time. Time to move on, time to grow up, time to live life.

Sometimes it was fun, but mostly it just felt like a lot of work and I am not a fan of awkwardness (there's a lot of that happening in the land of dating). But I trudged through anyhow, knowing it was a "good for me" and "part of my process" and all that jazz.

A year or so into it, after only a handful of dates and lots of mixed feelings about the whole thing, I got a message from a boy in Virginia during the summer of '07. I thought he was super-cute, but also thought to myself, eh, he's in Virginia. What could come of that? (I should also mention that he lived in the same area where I grew up, and just a few minutes away from where my family currently lived. weird).

I wrote him back, curious as to how he found me, and he told me that he had typed Blue Like Jazz into Match's search engine, and voila, there I was. (Blue Like Jazz was a book that was quite meaningful to Dan, and was listed on my profile as one of my favorites. He felt like if someone "got" this book, spiritually speaking, like he got it, it would be a good indicator of compatibility, of being on the same page not only spiritually but in regards to living life outside the box, a life full of adventure and hope and faith and love).*

Despite the good impression he made, I was a little lazy about keeping up the correspondence initially (as was he, honestly). We were both intrigued but neither one of us thought you could realistically build something from the ground up long-distance. The turning point came that August. He reached out to me again after a stretch of silence and sent this wonderful email that I remember having so much fun reading and responding to. Thus began a flurry of email activity. The more emails that went back & forth, the more we realized how much we had in common, even down to specifics, such as: having the same dream of living on a sailboat one day.

As summer moved into Fall, the more intrigued I became.

He told me he would be in New York in October for a one-night layover after his trip to Europe (which he was going on solo...just for fun. sigh...my kind of guy :) but first we decided to talk on the phone before meeting. You know, so I could make sure that he wasn't crazy or socially awkward or a 75-year-old man, or something. The phone call, which turned into several more calls before he left for his trip, was just as great as the email exchanges, and so we agreed to meet. On Saturday, October 13, 2007.

The weather was perfect that day -- crisp and Fall-like -- and the date prep went fairly smoothly, aside from a few minor setbacks (i.e.: he called to say that he had arrived to the city early, which sent me into a tailspin of panic and squeals (I wasn't quite ready), running around the apartment like a crazyperson, which then caused me to somehow catch my foot on a small large sliver of wood from the floor boards, sending me crashing to the floor in pain with a very loud, ungraceful thump, all of which my roommate watched unfold in a 5 second span, completely dumbfounded)...other than that setback, things went off without a hitch :)

We met in the lobby of the Grand Hyatt near Grand Central Station, and my first words to him were "in the flesh" as he pulled me in for a hug. I was so nervous. What if our chemistry didn't translate? What if he looked nothing like his pictures? (it did and he did, only better :) I loosened up as we walked and talked, his calming/kind/sweet presence immediately putting me at ease, making me feel safe. We strolled through Bryant Park and I pointed out my office building. We dodged tourists in Times Square and he told me about his trip. We drank coffee at Juan Valdez then hopped a train to the Village, all the while talking, sharing, laughing. Dinner was at Da Andrea on Hudson Street, and though I don't clearly remember our conversation over dinner, I do remember being so taken with him, impressed by his humble, quiet confidence (imagine being with someone who knows who they are! ahh, so refreshing).

We finished dinner, but didn't want the date to end, so we headed up to my 'hood, the Upper East Side, for ice cream and then eventually the piano bar, one of my favorite-ist places in all of New York. We sang and we laughed and I stole glances at his cute face, thinking: yep, he's a keeper. As the night wore on, the safer and happier I felt. I knew that this could be something. Which terrified and excited me at the same time.

We ended the night on my rooftop, me playing songs for him on my guitar (at his request) and talking into the wee hours of morning. We finally said goodnight around 3 a.m. (a 9 hour first date!), and I don't think I slept a wink that night.

From that moment on, it was so...easy. So refreshingly easy. Never was there one single game played, no emotions toyed with, no guessing. He called me when he said he would call. He said that he wanted to see me again, and so he did, booking himself a hotel room, taking me out on lovely, proper dates. And that was it. We never looked back. Soon we were hopping on trains and buses every weekend to see each other. And it just grew. So easily, so naturally. Amazingly drama-free (which was something we both desperately needed after being jerked around by other people a few too many times in the past).

One year and one month later, engagement. 10 months after that, wedding. And the rest is history.

Looking back on all of this, I am so thankful. Thankful that I was able to reach way down within myself to pull out that one small shred of bravery needed to step out of my comfort zone and into the world of online dating (which I shamelessly plug to anyone & everyone now!). And thankful for Dan, who has taken care of my heart so sweetly, so lovingly, since day 1. It's been one amazing journey. Happy three year anniversary, DB!

*We actually got a chance to meet Donald Miller, author of Blue Like Jazz, at a book signing last year, and shared our story with him. Very cool moment.

Beautiful.

picture-perfect Maine

It was a beautiful weekend and a beautiful place, so incredibly picturesque with their bright red lobsters, sparkling water and gorgeous coastlines.

Speaking of lobster, I had it twice. (And crab once). Yum.

And a beautiful time was had by all...

The weekend.

west village

It was a good, good weekend. Time spent in the Village. Time spent in the park. Time spent with friends. Time spent alone. And my favorite part -- date night with Dan complete with a walk through High Line Park (which is stunning) and dinner in the Meatpacking District. I took soo many pictures of Highline Park that I am too overwhelmed to pick out my favorite ones right now. But tomorrow we'll do a Top Five Favorite Pics of High Line, how 'bout that? See you then.

Oops.

Restore Gala at the Orensanz, Lower East Side

I know, I know....I missed a whole day on here (bad!). But I do have a good excuse. You see, I was at a gala last night (doesn't that sound so fancy & important? hehe :) and didn't get home until the wee hours of morning. And though it was in the back of my mind to just quickly stick a picture up here before heading to bed, my heavy eyelids and tired bones just wouldn't let me. Sorry! To make up for it, this will be an extra "full" post with lots of pics. K? :)

Back to the gala, though. It was a really lovely night for a very important cause at a BEAUTIFUL event space in the Lower East Side. And even better, the organization that was hosting the gala (Restore, a non-profit that provides long-term aftercare for international survivors of sex-trafficking -- read about their amazing work here) raised ALL of the money that they needed last night through ticket sales, auctioned items and donations and are now going to be able to build a safe house in the city for these women, something that is very much needed. Amazing!

In other news, the weather here has been out of control beautiful. Like, it feels as if we just fast-forwarded a few months to June weather. It's that gorgeous. 70 degrees, blue skies, sunshine. Perfect. (We so deserve this after last weekend, though, right, New York?). I went to Bryant Park during my lunch break yesterday, which was apparently everyone else's idea too, because it was absolutely packed with lunch-breakers happily eating, laughing & soaking up the sun. It was a beautiful sight.

And in more (happy) news....look who's back!!

Yay! After being gone ALL week on business, Dan finally returned this afternoon. Soooo happy :) And since I had today off, we were able to go out and do a little frolicking in the sunshine. Which made me very happy. Here are some pics from our time in Central Park today.

It really feels like Spring has finally come (though I'm trying not to get too used to this -- usually March is a beast of a month in New York. A girl can dream though!). Hope you have a lovely weekend and see you back here Monday.

Wedding Thoughts - Part 2 {let the ceremony begin...}

I thought I was going to be a hot mess when I saw my dad waiting for me outside, but surprisingly I managed to hold it together. The details of our exchange are a bit fuzzy now (due to my crazy-nerve haze) but I *do* recall nervously jabbering away like a monkey about everything from his spiffy tux to my red shoes and asking a million questions like: are there really people here? ohmygosh, who's here?? wait, did you see the people?

When we got the signal to start walking (we had quite a hike from the house to the arch way and then down the aisle) my dad whispered calming words to me as the nerves welled by the minute [note: I must mention that these nerves ("wedding nerves") are unlike any kind of nerves I've ever expereinced before, such as "audition nerves" or "gig nerves". Wedding nerves are huge, indescribable swells of emotion mixed with intense butterflies, rapid heart rate and the feeling of standing on the edge of something Very Big and Very Good (with just a hint of extreme anxiety because, seriously -- so. many. eyes. on. me! ACK)].

But once we got to the aisle and I saw those eyes -- Dan's beautiful eyes that were absolutely shining with love for me -- everything else just faded away, nerves included. By the time we reached the front, everything just clicked into place and I felt so alive, so full. I was suddenly acutely aware of all of the love surrounding me, not only from Dan, but from my dad on my right side, my mom on my left, my brother in front of me (he was our officiant and delivered the most beautiful, personable weding charge), all of my girls with tears in their eyes. I felt absolutely cocooned in love. And when the ceremony began at last, Dan's eyes shining with tears, my brother's voice breaking with emotion, I felt like I was going to burst with happy tears/love/emotion.

...to be continued...

{I just can't leave out these pics though -- some of my favorites: Dan's nephews trying to catch a glimpse of the bride, and Dan's reaction to his first glimpse of the bride :)}

Wedding Thoughts - Part 1 {pre-ceremony}

The day of the wedding I was much calmer than I thought I would be. I got a great night of sleep (surprising since I am not a good sleeper in the midst of excitement & anticipation), and woke up feeling excited, happy and pretty chill. The day started with a relaxing bath, a surprise phone call from a dear friend in South Africa (who couldn't make it to the wedding but wanted to shower me with happy tears and prayers before my big day), and then a quick bite to eat before heading out to get beautified with my girls.

Everything ran smoothly as we jetted to the salon (I could not have been happier with my hair. LOVED it) then back to the house where all of us girls plus my mom managed to get make-up on and ready to go, then out the door and on our way to the site in Middleburg where it was time to get dressed and photographed.

::meanwhile, although the weather looked a bit ominous in the morning, it cleared up and remained steady and cool and Fall-ish throughout the rest of the day. perfect::

The room where we got ready at the site was lovely. So beautiful and cozy. And my girls did such a fabulous job at keeping me laughing and calm and feeling loved. (Oh, so my girls. Let me introduce you :) There were 3 lovely bridesmaids: MOH cousin Lauren, longtime friend Nancy, and sister-in-law Angie; and then my 3 special girls: YWAM friend Melissa (Reader), NYC roomie Cynthia (Reader), and college friend Erin (special music). And of course my mom was there as well, keeping us all laughing and looking more beautiful than I've ever seen her.

We were having so much fun hanging out in the bridal suite and taking pictures outside on the beautiful property that I didn't realize how close we were getting to GO-time! Easy, breezy, and giddy was I in the moments leading up to the ceremony.

It wasn't until I heard the five minute warning that I began to well with nerves and emotion and jitters. There was still too much to DO! I had a laundry list of things I needed to accomplish before walking down the aisle (re-apply deodorant. brush teeth. more perfume. touch-up lipstick. etc. etc.!!), but instead of using the five minutes to do those things, I think I just ran around in confused circles talking a mile minute until I heard those two little words: It's Time.

I am pretty sure my heart just jumped out of my chest right then and there and landed in a little puddle on the floor (not in a bad way, mind you!). Not only had I not completed my list of Things To Do, but I suddenly felt like I hadn't sufficiently processed what was about to happen!! I was about to get m-a-r-r-i-e-d. MARRIED!

::meanwhile, on a different part of the property, the guys were getting ready in their "special room" -- this super cozy, little library...isn't it great?::

!!!!!!!!

So this is my last day of work for the next three (3!) weeks. We head down to Virginia today and will be there for the next week doing wedding prep stuff, errands and what-not before the BIG DAY!!!!!!!

I am so HYPER and EXCITED I literally Can't. Sit. Still.

Can't. Focus. On. ANYTHING!!!!!!!!!!!!

I literally have to keep myself from running and/or skipping everywhere (down the hall. to the bathroom. to the copy machine. EVERYWHERE!!) and I am pretty sure I have one of those slightly disturbing, spaced-out perma grins on my face.

Even typing this, I feel like my fingers are going to break the dang keyboard I am so FULL to the brim with energy!!!!!!!!!!!!!

AHHH. Okay. So if I can just calm the heck down and get my ADD brain to focus for a few more minutes, then I can perhaps finish all my tasks and get the heck OUTTA HERE!!!!!!

Sayonara, Day Job!!!

{and I apologize for all of the exclamation points. I am out of control today}

Love Thursday

{Santa Fe, 2008}

A slow and quiet morning at the Day Job has allowed me something incredibly unusual and valuable these days: me-time. Glorious, cherished, lovely me-time ... *sigh* ... it has been awhile. And so I decided to kick back with some Etsy browsing, Weddingbee-ing and blog reading (Dan sent me this great link, which then led me to this blog, which led me to this blog and then this one and...ahhh! so many lovely blogs out there!)

This one in particular grabbed my attention and I loved her "love thursday: out of focus" post so much that I decided to do one of my own (click here for more on "Love Thursday").

I have much to be thankful for these days when it comes to love, and although I have mentioned before that I am not much of a "public gusher," a wee bit of gushing is necessary at this moment :)

[Note: part of the reason I am a bit 'gush gun-shy' on this blog is because I am ultra-sensitive to the fact that there are many people out there in all sorts of different places when it comes to love and relationships, and hearing somebody else gush can bring out a range of conflicting emotions. I speak from experience. Just know, dear readers, that I write this from a place of extreme tender-heartedness, with an understanding and sensitivity that comes from a long history of failed love attempts, heartbreak and loneliness. I hope that, more than anything, my words somehow bring hope. Okay, end note and continuing on....]

Last night, Dan (being the incredible man that he is) agreed to meet me down in the Theater District at 10:00 after my rehearsal and have dinner with me (this is life lately: dinner at 10 or 11 p.m., bed at 1 or 2 a.m. Bad. Very bad). We ended up at a cute, rustic looking Italian place along 9th avenue and shared some red wine and yummy food as I jabbered on and on about rehearsal. For some reason, the convo turned and one of us got started on how happy the other one made us, or how we envision our future together, or how we never imagined that we would ever feel this way or find this kind of love...something along those lines! And then suddenly words and tears and emotions were just spilling out all over our plates of pasta! (Okay, so this is maybe not THAT unusual of a scenario -- we are actually both closet gushers :) but for some reason it just hit us both pretty hard last night...this really HUGE love of ours. And how incredibly lucky we are. And how far we've come in our lives to find one another. We both know what it's like to be broken by another person, to be alone, to have little hope that there really is someone out there....there were dark times for us both. But now here we are we (and I know I've never shared our story on here. I will do that at some point, I promise) and it feels all the sweeter and more amazing because of the roads we've traveled to get to this point.

I keep telling him that I feel like I won the prize! Like I got THE BEST MAN in the world! I guess that's what love does, though, right? Changes perspective, makes everything brighter, richer. Or as the writer of the 'Love Thursday' post stated: "My eyes have never seemed to regain their focus."

I enjoyed reading the comments left on her page, hearing the stories of others...so if you feel so inspired, go over there and leave your own Love Thursday comment on her blog. Or feel free to post one here -- I welcome it! (now that you know I'm a sucker for love :)

Confessions of a Non-Runner

So in order to get buff and toned and totally wedding-day-ready, Dan and I have decided that some sort of exercise routine needs to be implemented into our daily lives. Living in the city I walk a ton, climb (what feels like) THOUSANDS of stairs a week (thank you 5th floor walk-up) and generally am more active than if I were living in the 'burbs....BUT, that is a far cry from daily work-outs, runs, etc.

Let me start out by telling you a little bit about me and long distance running. I hate it. Really and truly HATE IT. Growing up, I was the girl in gym class ALWAYS at the back of the pack during that dreaded mile-run (that is if I was actually IN school that day -- I definitely recall trying to fake-sick my way out of mile-run day a few times). I was a pretty active kid, too -- sports, dance and even short-distance sprinting, no problem. But long-distance running and me...oil and water, people. My sides would cramp up, my legs would get all itchy and splotchy, my chest would tighten, convincing me that this was it...my time was up...I was going to die.

This "condition" continued well into my college and adult years. I recall one sunny afternoon at Mary Washington College feeling inspired to take a jog through the beautiful, woodsy area near campus. My roommate, a long-distance runner and star of the track team, told me she knew of the perfect trail for a beginner like me, and proceeded to take me out into the middle of the woods and run circles around me (literally) as I gasped and huffed and heart-attacked my way down the trail.

After college there were a couple other attempts to become a runner: once when I lived in Montana because it was just so beautiful and I wanted to try and tap into my "out-doorsy, athletic" side; and once when I lived in Michigan in attempt to get out all of the pent-up emotion and angst I had inside of me while living there.

Neither lasted because in the end I always remembered, Oh yeah. I HATE running.

I even found $60 lying on the ground the last (and only) time I ran in NYC. Convinced that God was rewarding me for my good and healthy habits, I vowed to run every week from that point on. But apparently neither God nor cash can keep me dedicated to this thing.

Okay. So back to Dan and I getting all buff and beautiful for the wedding. We contemplated joining a gym or taking a spinning class, but considering it costs a small fortune to do either we decided that running in the park was our best bet. Can't beat the scenery and it's always free.

I was seriously nervous on Wednesday night as I laced up my barely worn sneakers and attempted to stretch (how do you stretch?! I don't even know how to properly stretch!). I was nervous b/c I so badly wanted this to work (as in not die, so that we could actually do this on a regular basis), but didn't really think it would. And nervous b/c I didn't want Dan to see me as this train-wreck runner, but rather as a perfectly fit and athletically graceful woman!! (which is ridiculous, because I know he loves me big-time regardless of my "running skills")...but still...cramping up 2 minutes into a jog is pretty embarrassing.

We walked from my apartment towards the park, telling ourselves that we wouldn't push it, just go our own pace, yadda yadda.

Around Lexington Avenue we decided to start running. We ran from Lexington to Fifth Avenue, stopped in front of the MET to stretch, then ran over to the Reservoir where a HUGE and daunting runner's track stretched out before us. My anxiety grew as I watched happy runners effortlessly zip around the track like little gazelles. Jerks, I thought to myself, followed by, Nope, it's not gonna happen.

But Dan talked me off the ledge, and off we went. We started out nice and slow, with people seriously FLYING around us on either side (which was not exactly helpful to my fragile runner-esteem). But then a funny thing happened...I stopped paying attention to everyone else, and thought about how *cool* the moment was -- running beside my fiance in my favorite park in the world, skyscrapers surrounding us, the water beside us....it was just this beautifully surreal moment where I remembered 'Oh my gosh, I live in New York City. And I'm engaged! And he LIVES HERE NOW TOO so we can do things like RUN together after work!! Ahhh!' (I tried to convey this in words to Dan as we ran but it came out sounding more like short huffs and grunting sounds. I don't do so well with the simultaneous running and talking thing). It all made me feel so...happy. And before I knew it, so lost in this cool moment was I, we were half way around the reservoir! Dan pointed out how well we were doing and proposed something CRAZY -- what if we ran around the WHOLE THING without stopping...?? I started to say "Don't hold your breath, buddy," but I stopped myself because suddenly I really *wanted* to make it all the way around. I *needed* to do this!!

And guess what people...we DID. We ran around that whole dang track, not stopping once, 1.58 miles thank you very much. This probably sounds laughable to some, but was such a huge feat for me! In total, we think we did about 2 miles, and I didn't cramp up OR feel like I was having a heart attack OR get one single itchy splotch on my legs!! I don't know why -- the company? the beautiful setting? -- but I didn't! And in fact, I felt SO GOOD afterwards, I want to go again this weekend. It just made our night feel so much more productive and healthy and happy -- who knows, maybe it's those endorphin thingys that runners tell you about -- but it made me feel like I could really *do* this and stick to it this time.

We shall see. I will keep you posted!
