Jamaica and other thoughts.

How is it the 19th of December already?! I truly don't understand where the time is going. We've been back from Jamaica for over a week now and have been lost in a fog of Christmas preparation, sad, sad news (my heart absolutely aches for those families and the town of Newtown), and gray weather.

This season always feel like a tiring whirlwind, but especially so this year since my body is not operating at it's full physical capacity. Which means a lot of online shopping and not nearly enough out and about New York Christmas magic. In truth, New York is kicking my butt lately. I feel so tired. So tired. It is a kind of tired that it difficult to describe to others. It's as if the moment I step outside, the city yanks all of the energy and life out of my body. Ok, that sounds dramatic, but it's true! Turns out this city is *not* the most relaxing place to heal from brain surgery.

In contrast, Jamaica (or any tropical location, I imagine) most definitely IS the best place to heal physically, emotionally, etc.! And I completely credit the sun. I was a different person in Jamaica. I had ENERGY. I looked HEALTHY. I swam like a fish in the ocean and felt so wonderful! Of course there were moments when I had to stop and take a rest, feeling normal, post-surgery tiredness and effects. But nothing like the exhaustion I've experienced in New York.

Coming home I assumed that I was "better" and could maintain the same pace that I did in Jamaica. But I quickly realized that was not the case after nearly fainting in Whole Foods from carrying too many groceries. Of course, everyone knows that vacation, especially in a relaxed, tropical place, is good for you. But now I have seen firsthand just how imperative and vital the sun is for our overall health, especially in a situation like mine. Time to start planning some winter getaways to Florida, I think :)

Oh, and have I mentioned how beautiful the wedding was? And how overjoyed/filled-to-the-brim I am? Sigh...there needs to be a whole section devoted to just that alone. It was amazing. And I feel such deep happiness for my beautiful sista/friend and the wonderful, perfect-for-her man that she married. The wedding was beachy and heartfelt and so them. Perfect. And now some pictures! Of love, sunshine and healing...

Happy News!

Remember how yesterday I mentioned that there was *much* more to say, but I thought I'd save it? That's because it's SUCH BIG NEWS that it needs it's own post! Drumroll, please..........it's with a very happy heart and great excitement that I announce that.........Dan and I are expecting our first baby!! (it still feels so unbelievable to type out those words!).

I am about four months along and it feels *so* good to finally share this happy news on here. My belly has just started to pop ever so slightly, making this all feel much more real lately. We heard the heartbeat (loud and strong!) last Friday at our 16 week doctor's visit and are eagerly awaiting our next appointment on the 19th when we'll find out whether this little one is a boy or girl!

The last few months have been a struggle, for sure, in coping with the extreme tiredness and nausea (that explains why I've been a bit blah on the ol' blog), especially with the rough and long winter we've had. BUT...spring is coming (despite the endless chilly temps) and I am officially in the "Glory Days" of 2nd trimester! Feeling pretty good these days, although the show this past week was certainly a challenge to my stamina. I've been trying to catch up on sleep and rest as much as I can during this crazy Ragtime season, but I have to say: it's been kind of neat dancing and singing on a great big stage alongside so many talented people with this little one along for the ride :) Will make a great story for him/her later, I think :)

October 13.

us in the early days

A very important date. A date on which my life changed forever, in a really, really good way. Three years ago exactly, on October 13, 2007, I had my first date with Dan :)

This is a story I've been meaning to tell for a looong time, but have just never gotten around to writing it down. So I figured, what better day to do that than today? On our three year "anniversary." Soooo (deep breath, this is gonna be a long one), here goes.

It all started with a lonely, mopey girl in New York (me) and a dashingly handsome (but also little bit lonely) boy in Virginia (Dan). My NYC roommate/sista had urged me to try online dating when I first moved in with her, and determined not to waste my time in New York being lonely and mopey (and also because she was a pretty persuasive roomie), I signed up. And proceeded to go on a series of mediocre, sometimes wildly uncomfortable, dates all around New York City. It should also be mentioned that I hadn't dated much AT ALL prior to this. A few dates here and there over the years, and then one quite serious relationship that ended unexpectedly, leaving me heartbroken and lost (that relationship, unfortunately and unhealthily, kept resurfacing, even throughout my time in New York, and, in the very end, left me & my fragile heart in a heaping pile of wreckage)(not to be dramatic or anything). So. Dating, in a nutshell, scared me. And excited me a little, too, because I knew it was time. Time to move on, time to grow up, time to live life.

Sometimes it was fun, but mostly it just felt like a lot of work and I am not a fan of awkwardness (there's a lot of that happening in the land of dating). But I trudged through anyhow, knowing it was a "good for me" and "part of my process" and all that jazz.

A year or so into it, after only a handful of dates and lots of mixed feelings about the whole thing, I got a message from a boy in Virginia during the summer of '07. I thought he was super-cute, but also thought to myself, eh, he's in Virginia. What could come of that? (I should also mention that he lived in the same area where I grew up, and just a few minutes away from where my family currently lived. weird).

I wrote him back, curious as to how he found me, and he told me that he had typed Blue Like Jazz into Match's search engine, and voila, there I was. (Blue Like Jazz was a book that was quite meaningful to Dan, and was listed on my profile as one of my favorites. He felt like if someone "got" this book, spiritually speaking, like he got it, it would be a good indicator of compatibility, of being on the same page not only spiritually but in regards to living life outside the box, a life full of adventure and hope and faith and love).*

Despite the good impression he made, I was a little lazy about keeping up the correspondence initially (as was he, honestly). We were both intrigued but neither one of us thought you could realistically build something from the ground up long-distance. The turning point came that August. He reached out to me again after a stretch of silence and sent this wonderful email that I remember having so much fun reading and responding to. Thus began a flurry of email activity. The more emails that went back & forth, the more we realized how much we had in common, even down to specifics, such as: having the same dream of living on a sailboat one day.

As summer moved into Fall, the more intrigued I became.

He told me he would be in New York in October for a one-night layover after his trip to Europe (which he was going on solo...just for fun. sigh...my kind of guy :) but first we decided to talk on the phone before meeting. You know, so I could make sure that he wasn't crazy or socially awkward or a 75-year-old man, or something. The phone call, which turned into several more calls before he left for his trip, was just as great as the email exchanges, and so we agreed to meet. On Saturday, October 13, 2007.

The weather was perfect that day -- crisp and Fall-like -- and the date prep went fairly smoothly, aside from a few minor setbacks (i.e.: he called to say that he had arrived to the city early, which sent me into a tailspin of panic and squeals (I wasn't quite ready), running around the apartment like a crazyperson, which then caused me to somehow catch my foot on a small large sliver of wood from the floor boards, sending me crashing to the floor in pain with a very loud, ungraceful thump, all of which my roommate watched unfold in a 5 second span, completely dumbfounded)...other than that setback, things went off without a hitch :)

We met in the lobby of the Grand Hyatt near Grand Central Station, and my first words to him were "in the flesh" as he pulled me in for a hug. I was so nervous. What if our chemistry didn't translate? What if he looked nothing like his pictures? (it did and he did, only better :) I loosened up as we walked and talked, his calming/kind/sweet presence immediately putting me at ease, making me feel safe. We strolled through Bryant Park and I pointed out my office building. We dodged tourists in Times Square and he told me about his trip. We drank coffee at Juan Valdez then hopped a train to the Village, all the while talking, sharing, laughing. Dinner was at Da Andrea on Hudson Street, and though I don't clearly remember our conversation over dinner, I do remember being so taken with him, impressed by his humble, quiet confidence (imagine being with someone who knows who they are! ahh, so refreshing).

We finished dinner, but didn't want the date to end, so we headed up to my 'hood, the Upper East Side, for ice cream and then eventually the piano bar, one of my favorite-ist places in all of New York. We sang and we laughed and I stole glances at his cute face, thinking: yep, he's a keeper. As the night wore on, the safer and happier I felt. I knew that this could be something. Which terrified and excited me at the same time.

We ended the night on my rooftop, me playing songs for him on my guitar (at his request) and talking into the wee hours of morning. We finally said goodnight around 3 a.m. (a 9 hour first date!), and I don't think I slept a wink that night.

From that moment on, it was so...easy. So refreshingly easy. Never was there one single game played, no emotions toyed with, no guessing. He called me when he said he would call. He said that he wanted to see me again, and so he did, booking himself a hotel room, taking me out on lovely, proper dates. And that was it. We never looked back. Soon we were hopping on trains and buses every weekend to see each other. And it just grew. So easily, so naturally. Amazingly drama-free (which was something we both desperately needed after being jerked around by other people a few too many times in the past).

One year and one month later, engagement. 10 months after that, wedding. And the rest is history.

Looking back on all of this, I am so thankful. Thankful that I was able to reach way down within myself to pull out that one small shred of bravery needed to step out of my comfort zone and into the world of online dating (which I shamelessly plug to anyone & everyone now!). And thankful for Dan, who has taken care of my heart so sweetly, so lovingly, since day 1. It's been one amazing journey. Happy three year anniversary, DB!

*We actually got a chance to meet Donald Miller, author of Blue Like Jazz, at a book signing last year, and shared our story with him. Very cool moment.

Dreams.

more magical-ness from the very magical Bryant Park

Never been so happy to see a Friday, people! After a *very* long week (and a lot of late nights), this has been a pretty amazing & lovely Friday night of no plans, a homemade dinner and mindless TV watching. Perfect!

It was so difficult to come off the high of last night's performance that I couldn't sleep at all (which made for a pretty rough day, today). But it's okay -- it was totally worth it! It was probably one of my favorite shows to date. There was this incredible energy in the room, we had a great turn-out, and it was so amazing to finally have other musicians to collaborate with again. It was definitely one of those nights that remind me of Dreams realized.

Because there was a time when I didn't live in New York -- I barely dared to dream it -- and the idea of standing on a stage in this city before a live audience definitely terrified the pants off me. But somehow I did dare to dream. And Caffe Vivaldi was one of the first "New York gems" I discovered upon landing here.

It was the winter of '05 and I was living in Jersey but coming into the city every chance I could get to check out open mics and scout out live music venues. I stopped by Vivaldi on a Monday night and sat in a window seat by myself, nursing a hot apple cider. As I sat there listening to various singer-songwriters do their thing -- the thing I so wanted to be doing -- I remember it started to snow. And it was just so perfect. So beautiful. Such a classic New York scene that made my heart swell. Here I was, a wannabe musician, a wannabe New Yorker, sitting alone in a candlelit cafe in the heart of the Village. And I decided right then and there that a) I would live in Manhattan, by golly, and b) I would play a show at Caffe Vivaldi one day. It took a little while but I was in Manhattan by summer of '06 and playing regular shows at Vivaldi by '08. (!!) And now I've played so many shows there that it feels familiar. Comfortable.

After the show was over last night, I sat at a table in the back by the fireplace along with Dan and all of my lovely, supportive friends who had come out, and it really struck me: this is it. My dreams playing out, right here, right now! And I don't just mean musically. I think about that girl sitting alone in the window seat five years ago, and then look around at all of the people & love surrounding me. Such support. So many dreams come true. It is amazing (truly amazing!) to think of all that has happened in five years. I am so grateful to New York for being everything I thought it could be (and more), but even more grateful to God for making it all happen. Last night really brought that realization home: dreams can sometimes take a little while, but [insert cliché phrase here, ie: they're worth the wait! ... they really DO come true! ... we can make it happen!]. I think you know what I mean. :)

Aloha! {the honeymoon}

Although Dan and I both have very long lists of many places around the world that we'd love to visit (high on the list for me right now: Italy and Greece), when it came time to pick our honeymoon destination, it was a fairly easy choice. We wanted a) sun, sand and tropical drinks b) beautiful sunsets to provide the perfect romantic backdrop, and c) tiki torches lit up against a clear and starry sky. That landed us in beautiful, dreamy Hawaii and we couldn't have been happier with our choice.

With six days in Kauai followed by six days in Maui, it was an absolutely lovely honeymoon -- 12 days of soaking up the sun, boat rides, naps on the beach, snorkeling, candle-lit dinners and luaus. Beyond perfect. A dream.

Wedding Thoughts - Part 5 {the reception}

While our guests were cocktail-houring up on the terrace (photos can be seen here), Dan and I stole away for a private photo shoot. It was nice to have some alone time to enjoy our first few minutes of married life together. Some of my favorite shots from that:

We had a few more moments alone together as we waited up on the terrace to be announced. The setting was absolutely breathtaking and I just remember trying to soak it all in, feeling so alive and at peace, as the sounds of our friends and families' laughter filled the air. It was a nice moment.

Finally, it was time for the reception to begin (yay!). We were announced into the tent, which looked spectacular & so magical, had our first dance to Eric Clapton's Wonderful Tonight, then settled in for the toasts. My dad delivered an absolutely hilarious and touching toast, followed by a few sweet words from my step-dad, George, then toasts from the best man and matron of honor (two people who know how to do funny).

Dinner was a whirlwind of attempting to eat the tasty food while also connecting to and laughing with our dear guests who stopped by our table for a visit (and I loved soaking up all of their lovely comments about the ceremony which, I had to agree, was the best ceremony ever :)

The weather continued to be crisp and Fall-like, and as the sun set behind the Blue Ridge Mountains while we dined, the setting was transformed from beautiful to catch-your-breath gorgeous. (Even these beautiful pictures don't convey how magical it really was).

After dinner we unveiled our big surprise of the evening -- the band!

Anyone who knows me knows that I am a total Beatles nut, and while, admittedly, we initially wondered whether a Beatles tribute band might be a tad over the top for a wedding, we decided to go for it anyway, and were SO GLAD we did! We managed to keep this element hidden from most of our guests and their reactions at the "unveiling" were priceless. The band was unbelievable and we all spent the rest of the night singing our hearts out and dancing up a storm. I've never had so much fun in all my life. I was in heaven! [Live Beatles' music + wedding love + dancing w/ all your favorite people = UTTER, inexplicable JOY].

I could have used another hour or two of music and dancing and laughing with Dan and our guests, but, alas, eventually it was time for the party to end. After all of our goodbyes we made our way down the path towards the getaway car through a sea of sparklers. Magic.

When we reached end of the driveway, I looked back at all the twinkly lights of the sparklers behind us and felt this incredible swell of emotions. It just looked so beautiful, everything all lit up, and I could just feel the outpouring of love coming from everyone, all of these people who meant so much to us. It was one of those electrifying moments in life when you realize that THIS, this is what it's all about. Moments like this. Sigh. It was truly the most amazing day of my life.

{action shot: driving away w/ the wind in our hair. and onto the next adventure -- Hawaii!!}

Wedding Thoughts - Part 4 {ceremony, con't...}

After my brother David delivered his wedding charge, which as I mentioned before was so beautiful and touching, it was time for Erin's special music and our private time of prayer. She wowed everyone with an incredible rendition of Paul McCartney's Maybe I'm Amazed (one of my all-time favorite love songs) and Dan had me in tears as he held my hand tightly and whispered heartfelt prayers.

And then it was time for the vows -- probably my favorite moment of the entire ceremony. We chose to write and recite personal vows to one another and then exchange traditional vows following that. His words to me were so beautiful and sweet, it was a serious struggle to keep it together. We decided to memorize them, which I am glad for because we were able to look each other in the eye, which made it feel more genuine (it was also helpful on the honeymoon when I requested to hear those beautiful vows again. Which I did. A lot. And still do :)

A snippet of Dan's vows (edited):
In all my life I didn't think that what we have was possible. You came into my life and single-handedly made me very optimistic about the future ... I come here today in complete confidence of our relationship and our future ... Your heart and your kindness are what first drew me to you, but I will love you for all of my days for no other reason than because you are you.

And a snippet of mine (edited):
You make me happier than I have ever been in my entire life. Since being with you there has been this peace and joy and fullness in me that was never there before ... I promise to love you deeply for the rest of my life, to laugh with you, to care for you, to stand by you, to travel the world with you and live life to the fullest with you ... You are truly the love of my life and I thank God every day that He brought you to me.

I was so full to the brim with excitement & emotion, and SO relieved that the 'public speaking' portion of the ceremony was over with, I could hardly keep still for the rest of the ceremony (as evidenced by my giddy, ants-in-the-pants moves caught on video and in pictures).

After the traditional vows and the exchanging of the rings it was the moment we'd been waaaaiting for: the pronouncement and kiss...

And then just like that...husband and wife!

{up next: the reception! thanks for sticking with me on these recaps. don't know how interesting they are for the rest of the world, but i've found it incredibly rewarding to look back on all of these moments and process them through writing. so thanks for indulging me whilst I process :)}

Wedding Thoughts - Part 3 {ceremony - the readings}

Choosing the readings proved to be a difficult task. We spent months googling and flipping through our books, trying to find the perfect excerpts to reflect *us* and capture the mood/tone of what we wanted. All along we knew we wanted one scripture reading and one literary reading, but I was very set on venturing outside the box and away from the typical wedding/love readings. Here is what we ended up with:

Song of Songs 2:10-13, 8:6-7 read by the lovely Melissa:

Arise, my love, my fair one, and come away;
for now the winter is past, the rain is over and gone.
The flowers appear on the earth;
the time of singing has come,
and the voice of the turtledove is heard in our land.
The fig tree puts forth its figs, and the vines are in blossom;
they give forth fragrance.
Arise, my love, my fair one, and come away.

Set me as a seal upon your heart, as a seal upon your arm;
for love is strong as death, passion fierce as the grave.
Its flashes are flashes of fire, a raging flame.
Many waters cannot quench love,
neither can floods drown it.
If one offered for love all the wealth of his house,
it would be utterly scorned.

I love that first part: for now the winter is past, the rain is over and gone, the flowers appear on the earth; the time of singing has come... because it is so fitting for us. I speak for us both when I say that there were some dark and rainy days, relationship-wise, prior to meeting one another. And now finally, thankyouJesus, winter truly has passed so let the singing begin!!

The second reading was an excerpt from Donald Miller's book Blue Like Jazz, a book that is incredibly special to us, and there was no one more perfect to read it at the ceremony than my New York roommate Cynthia (the story & meaning behind Blue Like Jazz coming soon!):

I will love you, as sure as He loved me. I will discover what I can discover and though you remain a mystery, save God’s own knowledge, what I disclose of you I will keep in the warmest chamber of my heart, the very chamber where God has stowed Himself in me. And I will do this to my death, and to death it may bring me.

I will love you like God, because of God, mighted by the power of God. I will stop expecting your love, demanding your love, trading for your love, gaming for your love. I will simply love. I am giving myself to you, and tomorrow I will do it again. I suppose the clock itself will wear thin its time before I am ended at this altar of dying and dying again. God risked Himself on me. I will risk myself on you. And together, we will learn to love, and perhaps then, and only then, understand this gravity that drew Him, unto us.

Wedding Thoughts - Part 2 {let the ceremony begin...}

I thought I was going to be a hot mess when I saw my dad waiting for me outside, but surprisingly I managed to hold it together. The details of our exchange are a bit fuzzy now (due to my crazy-nerve haze) but I *do* recall nervously jabbering away like a monkey about everything from his spiffy tux to my red shoes and asking a million questions like: are there really people here? ohmygosh, who's here?? wait, did you see the people?

When we got the signal to start walking (we had quite a hike from the house to the arch way and then down the aisle) my dad whispered calming words to me as the nerves welled by the minute [note: I must mention that these nerves ("wedding nerves") are unlike any kind of nerves I've ever expereinced before, such as "audition nerves" or "gig nerves". Wedding nerves are huge, indescribable swells of emotion mixed with intense butterflies, rapid heart rate and the feeling of standing on the edge of something Very Big and Very Good (with just a hint of extreme anxiety because, seriously -- so. many. eyes. on. me! ACK)].

But once we got to the aisle and I saw those eyes -- Dan's beautiful eyes that were absolutely shining with love for me -- everything else just faded away, nerves included. By the time we reached the front, everything just clicked into place and I felt so alive, so full. I was suddenly acutely aware of all of the love surrounding me, not only from Dan, but from my dad on my right side, my mom on my left, my brother in front of me (he was our officiant and delivered the most beautiful, personable weding charge), all of my girls with tears in their eyes. I felt absolutely cocooned in love. And when the ceremony began at last, Dan's eyes shining with tears, my brother's voice breaking with emotion, I felt like I was going to burst with happy tears/love/emotion.

...to be continued...

{I just can't leave out these pics though -- some of my favorites: Dan's nephews trying to catch a glimpse of the bride, and Dan's reaction to his first glimpse of the bride :)}

Wedding Thoughts - Part 1 {pre-ceremony}

The day of the wedding I was much calmer than I thought I would be. I got a great night of sleep (surprising since I am not a good sleeper in the midst of excitement & anticipation), and woke up feeling excited, happy and pretty chill. The day started with a relaxing bath, a surprise phone call from a dear friend in South Africa (who couldn't make it to the wedding but wanted to shower me with happy tears and prayers before my big day), and then a quick bite to eat before heading out to get beautified with my girls.

Everything ran smoothly as we jetted to the salon (I could not have been happier with my hair. LOVED it) then back to the house where all of us girls plus my mom managed to get make-up on and ready to go, then out the door and on our way to the site in Middleburg where it was time to get dressed and photographed.

::meanwhile, although the weather looked a bit ominous in the morning, it cleared up and remained steady and cool and Fall-ish throughout the rest of the day. perfect::

The room where we got ready at the site was lovely. So beautiful and cozy. And my girls did such a fabulous job at keeping me laughing and calm and feeling loved. (Oh, so my girls. Let me introduce you :) There were 3 lovely bridesmaids: MOH cousin Lauren, longtime friend Nancy, and sister-in-law Angie; and then my 3 special girls: YWAM friend Melissa (Reader), NYC roomie Cynthia (Reader), and college friend Erin (special music). And of course my mom was there as well, keeping us all laughing and looking more beautiful than I've ever seen her.

We were having so much fun hanging out in the bridal suite and taking pictures outside on the beautiful property that I didn't realize how close we were getting to GO-time! Easy, breezy, and giddy was I in the moments leading up to the ceremony.

It wasn't until I heard the five minute warning that I began to well with nerves and emotion and jitters. There was still too much to DO! I had a laundry list of things I needed to accomplish before walking down the aisle (re-apply deodorant. brush teeth. more perfume. touch-up lipstick. etc. etc.!!), but instead of using the five minutes to do those things, I think I just ran around in confused circles talking a mile minute until I heard those two little words: It's Time.

I am pretty sure my heart just jumped out of my chest right then and there and landed in a little puddle on the floor (not in a bad way, mind you!). Not only had I not completed my list of Things To Do, but I suddenly felt like I hadn't sufficiently processed what was about to happen!! I was about to get m-a-r-r-i-e-d. MARRIED!

::meanwhile, on a different part of the property, the guys were getting ready in their "special room" -- this super cozy, little library...isn't it great?::

A teaser...

I think one of the reasons I've had trouble writing about the wedding is because I don't even know where to begin. It was just too magical, too amazing, to put into words.

By far the most extraordinary, love-filled, joyous day of my life.

Sigh.

I feel like I am going to cry right now even thinking about it....! Whew. Okay, maybe more words later. For now, just pictures* :)

I could hardly contain my excitement as my brother (our officiant!) pronounced us husband and wife. I was one giddy bride...

I love this picture. Oh the anticipation!!

Best. Kiss. EVER.

*btw, we are in love with our photos. Thanks, Kevin!

Secrets to a Happy Marriage

This man has put a rose at his wife's bedside every day for the last 60 years of their marriage (article here). Every. Day. 60 years!! And I love that he doesn't think of it as such a remarkable thing, stating that he believes if more couples made selfless gestures to their spouse or loved one, there would be fewer broken relationships.

With the wedding just around the corner, I've been contemplating things like this lately. Keeping romance alive. The secret(s) to a long and happy marriage. And my own grandparent's 56 year marriage. I recently recalled a scene that I witnessed between them a few years ago, the last summer of my nana's life (which I was privileged enough to spend with her and my papa at the beach). They were in their room getting ready for bed, each one helping the other with their nightly routines -- putting in eye drops, applying lotion to their hands and feet, reminding each other which medications to take. As they puttered around their bathroom together, which had started to look more like a drugstore than a bathroom, they laughed and talked, one of them saying to the other, "You didn't know what you were signing up for all those years ago when you married me, did you?!" It was such a touching scene. After so many years together, their love, friendship and senses of humor were still firmly intact. If asked, I am sure they would have agreed with this article's secret formula to a happy and successful marriage: plenty of kisses, cuddles and a few romantic nights out. But they probably would have also added that a shared faith, common interests and a deep friendship were extremely important as well (their typical response when asked this question over the years).

As it turns out, the blogger by which I found this article (who just got married herself last weekend -- congrats!!) is having guest bloggers share their secrets to a happy marriage while she is away on her honeymoon -- an idea that was apparently inspired by this couple (who are indeed an inspiration)! So go take a looksie. And if you have any stories or tips of your own to share with me, feel free to put them in the comments section here!

Deep Thoughts

Perhaps inspired by last night's Bachelorette: After the Final Rose (yes, I watched. don't judge me!) or host Chris Harrison's deep and ponderous questions for the broken-hearted rejected bachelors such as: how are you feeling right now? (pause) how about now? (pause) hey, remember that time you left the show broken-hearted and were crying in the limo? (pause) how did you feel about that? I began contemplating our impending nuptials and future together, thus crafting my own deep and ponderous questions. And so a conversation a little something like this followed:

Katie: hey, how are you feeling about the wedding? are you nervous?
Dan: no.
Katie: scared?
Dan: no.
Katie: what about future stuff...like having kids. doesn't that scare you a little?
Dan: no.
Katie: does anything scare you?
Dan: (pause) snakes.

Love Thursday

{Santa Fe, 2008}

A slow and quiet morning at the Day Job has allowed me something incredibly unusual and valuable these days: me-time. Glorious, cherished, lovely me-time ... *sigh* ... it has been awhile. And so I decided to kick back with some Etsy browsing, Weddingbee-ing and blog reading (Dan sent me this great link, which then led me to this blog, which led me to this blog and then this one and...ahhh! so many lovely blogs out there!)

This one in particular grabbed my attention and I loved her "love thursday: out of focus" post so much that I decided to do one of my own (click here for more on "Love Thursday").

I have much to be thankful for these days when it comes to love, and although I have mentioned before that I am not much of a "public gusher," a wee bit of gushing is necessary at this moment :)

[Note: part of the reason I am a bit 'gush gun-shy' on this blog is because I am ultra-sensitive to the fact that there are many people out there in all sorts of different places when it comes to love and relationships, and hearing somebody else gush can bring out a range of conflicting emotions. I speak from experience. Just know, dear readers, that I write this from a place of extreme tender-heartedness, with an understanding and sensitivity that comes from a long history of failed love attempts, heartbreak and loneliness. I hope that, more than anything, my words somehow bring hope. Okay, end note and continuing on....]

Last night, Dan (being the incredible man that he is) agreed to meet me down in the Theater District at 10:00 after my rehearsal and have dinner with me (this is life lately: dinner at 10 or 11 p.m., bed at 1 or 2 a.m. Bad. Very bad). We ended up at a cute, rustic looking Italian place along 9th avenue and shared some red wine and yummy food as I jabbered on and on about rehearsal. For some reason, the convo turned and one of us got started on how happy the other one made us, or how we envision our future together, or how we never imagined that we would ever feel this way or find this kind of love...something along those lines! And then suddenly words and tears and emotions were just spilling out all over our plates of pasta! (Okay, so this is maybe not THAT unusual of a scenario -- we are actually both closet gushers :) but for some reason it just hit us both pretty hard last night...this really HUGE love of ours. And how incredibly lucky we are. And how far we've come in our lives to find one another. We both know what it's like to be broken by another person, to be alone, to have little hope that there really is someone out there....there were dark times for us both. But now here we are we (and I know I've never shared our story on here. I will do that at some point, I promise) and it feels all the sweeter and more amazing because of the roads we've traveled to get to this point.

I keep telling him that I feel like I won the prize! Like I got THE BEST MAN in the world! I guess that's what love does, though, right? Changes perspective, makes everything brighter, richer. Or as the writer of the 'Love Thursday' post stated: "My eyes have never seemed to regain their focus."

I enjoyed reading the comments left on her page, hearing the stories of others...so if you feel so inspired, go over there and leave your own Love Thursday comment on her blog. Or feel free to post one here -- I welcome it! (now that you know I'm a sucker for love :)
